Michelle Obama returned to The One Show to reunite with school pupils she inspired two years ago.

The former First Lady spoke to seven girls from Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School (EGA) in Islington and Mulberry School for Girls in Tower Hamlets, offering them life advice two years since she last paid them a visit.

Laying down the facts for the girls, Michelle told them one of her biggest lessons in life, and said: ‘No matter how high you get or how smart you are, or how successful, life will throw you things that you’re not necessarily prepared for.

‘If you know how to get yourself through it you will succeed.’

Speaking about one of the biggest pieces of advice she could give, Michelle added: ‘Don’t be so hard on yourself, you have time for growth and you’re going to have bumps along the way but that’s part of the process.

‘You can’t define yourself by the bumps and the mistakes that you make.

‘Who you want to be as a person is who you want to be as a young woman, and that takes time.’

The young girls praised Michelle as being an ‘inspiration’ them, while former students returned to talk about the impact the American author and philanthropist’s visit had on their life.

Nusrath Hassan, 23, who previously studied at Mulberry, said: ‘I am so excited for people like Synicia [a new student aged 12] and the younger students here at Mulberry to be able to experience what I had experienced.

‘Mrs Obama has had such a fundamental impact and difference on my life.’

‘We’re delighted that Michelle Obama wanted to share her inspiring thoughts on vital issues affecting young women in today’s society with our viewers in this exclusive UK broadcast,’ Rob Unsworth, Head of The One Show said.

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.
