UK game releases 2021: What new video games are coming out in April?

2021 has not been a busy year when it comes to major new game releases, but Outriders and Oddworld: Soulstorm are looking to change that in April.

It has been a slow start to the year for video games so far and, to be honest, it’s likely to be a slow middle as well. That’s mainly because while there were a fair amount of new games out last year they were mostly titles that were almost finished before the pandemic began, whereas anything coming out now has had to be completed with more people working from home.

Nevertheless, there are still major new launches of note in April, starting with Outriders on the first of the month. A mix of Gears Of War and Destiny, from the makers of Bulletstorm and Gears Of War: Judgment, it’s not a games as a service title exactly but it is still pushing its credentials as a single-player and co-op adventure you can keep coming back to.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is also something to look forward to on the 6th, a game that started life as a remake of Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus on the PS1 but evolved into something almost entirely different. It’s still a follow-up to Oddworld: New ‘N’ Tasty! but at this stage is practically a brand new game.

Also of note is the remaster of Star Wars: Republic Commando, which is not only one of the best Star Wars games from the prequel era but what is now a rare example of a squad-based shooter. Another more substantial remake is Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139… which aims to bring the action of the original Nier game up to par with Automata.

Arguably the biggest release of the month is left right to the end, with PlayStation 5 exclusive Returnal, from Resogun creators Housemarque. April 30 actually sees a number of prominent releases though, including the long-awaited New Pokémon Snap and R-Type Final 2.
