‘We’ve decided a change is needed’: Ant and Dec devastate fans with April Fools’ Day misfire

Ant and Dec’s lighthearted announcement on April Fools’ Day backfired on them as they revealed they are rebranding as Dec and Ant (even writing that felt weird).

The Britain’s Got Talent presenters shared the ‘announcement’ on twitter on April 1, saying it was ‘only fair on the little guy’ to put his name first for a change.

‘Some big news for you guys… after 30 long years together we’ve decided a change is needed, and so without further ado, we can announce we’ll now be officially known as Dec & Ant. It’s only fair on the little guy,’ they wrote on Thursday.

They even added statements from each of them about the ‘change’, with Dec saying: ‘I’m over the moon, we agreed back in the Byker days that he’d take the first 30 years and I’d take the rest…it’s really the only reason I’ve been hanging around with him for this long.’

Ant added: ‘I’ve had a good run, but it’s time to hand over the reins. Hopefully this step back will give me more time to focus on some of my neglected hobbies…such as stamp collecting and medieval battle reenactments.’

‘Dec and Ant’ is all very funny, but the TV stars ended up panicking their followers who read the sombre start to their tweet and instead thought they were parting ways.

A fan replied: ‘This didn’t even have the desired effect on me because I thought it was a goodbye tweet, thought you were saying you had enough! That wasn’t even what the aim of the tweet was, I’ve definitely read too many boyband breaking up statements.’

Another tweet read: ‘April fool to me… Before I read the whole sentence thought you were splitting up!’

‘Well let’s just say i quite frankly had a heart attack when i woke up to ‘some big news for you guy, after 30 long years together’…haha, happy april fools day,’ another said.

One follower replied: ‘When I tell you my heart rate dropped whilst reading the first half of that caption’, while another wrote: ‘Wow I panicked then that you was retiring. Thank god that’s not true! Not sure though Dec and Ant has the same ring to it hahahaha.’

Read a further reply: ‘When I read that “change is needed” I got a miniheartattack (sic) thinking that your doing something even more horrible but my heart fought through when I read the rest…then I already knew it was a joke, but realised the date only when coming to the comments.’

Ant and Dec of course have previous when it comes to pranking people, with their most recent Saturday Night Takeaway stunt targeting their ITV colleagues live on air.
