With supermarkets upping their fashion game it’s time to choose between high street hero or supermarket chic

NEW clothes have come from the supermarkets in lockdown – and luckily, the grocery giants have seriously upped their fashion credentials in response.

But are Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Tesco and Marks & Spencer now sufficiently on-trend to bypass the high street completely when shops reopen on April 12?

It’s time to choose your tribe.

Jess Evans can help you pick, pitting those six retailers against our high-street heroes with near-identical outfits.

ASDA V NEW LOOK

Asda: Dress, £14, jacket, £28, boots, £16, headband, £4; all George at asda.com, Total: £62
New Look: Dress, £25.99, jacket, £33, boots, £29.99, headband, £5; all NewLook.co.uk, Total: £93.98

Jess says: There is not much difference in quality between these animal-print dresses, so the supermarket outfit comes out tops, being £11.99 cheaper.

But you might opt for high-street leather for a softer feel in both the jacket and the boots.

SAINSBURY’S V OASIS

Oasis: Collared jumper, £49, skirt, £39, boots, £55.50, bag, £27; all oasis-stores.com, Total: £170.50
Sainsbury’s: Collared jumper, £20, skirt, £16; boots, £25; bag, £16; all Tu at sainsburys.co.uk, Total: £77

Jess says: The Oasis skirt felt thicker and gave a stronger A-line shape which held its place.

The supermarket version was flimsier. The high-street boots fitted around the ankle better, too. Overall, Oasis’ version just pipped it.

TESCO V ASOS

Tesco: Jumper dress, £20, earrings, £4, sunglasses, £7.50, shoes, £15; all F&F at tesco.com, Total: £46.50
Asos: Jumper dress, £35, earrings, £5, shoes, £12; all asos.com, Total: £52

Jess says: Jumper dresses are a big trend and ideal for this tricky time of year, when the weather can’t make up its mind.

Pair with tights on colder days and bare all when the sun comes out, teamed with trainers, sandals or boots.

M&S V NEXT

Next: Jumper, £28, jeans, £35, bag, £28, shoes, £40; all next.co.uk, Total: £131
M&S: Jumper, £25, jeans, £39.50, shoes, £35, bag, £79; all marksandspencer.co.uk, Total: £178.50

Jess says: Similar pricing and quality for these two looks.

The only big difference is the handbag – the Next version is cheaper and polyester whereas the Marks & Spencer one is twice as expensive but 100 per cent leather.

ALDI V ZARA

Aldi: Denim dress, £9.99, cardigan, £12.99, shoes, £12.99, all aldi.co.uk, Total: £35.97
Zara: Denim dress, £29.99, cardigan, £25.99, shoes, £25.99; all zara.com, Total: £81.97

Jess says: Zara’s outfit looks better quality and slightly smarter in style than the Aldi version but is more than double the price.

Both dresses are 100 per cent cotton and feel equally soft, so I think you could get good wear out of both.

MORRISONS V WAREHOUSE

Morrisons: Trousers, £14, top, £14, gillet, £25, shoes, £12; all nutmeg.morrisons.com, Total: £65
Warehouse: Pink set, £52, gilet, £65, trainers, £32, warehouse.co.uk, Total: £149

Jess says: With Morrisons’ two-piece set coming in at £28, the high-street version jumps massively in price.

The Warehouse tracksuit is slightly softer and fluffier but the same look is a fraction of the cost at the supermarket.
