Kate Garraway has shared a hopeful update after revealing her second Easter at home in lockdown without her husband is ‘so hard’.

Derek Draper has been in hospital for over a year after contracting Covid-19. He is now free of the virus, however it has caused severe damage to his body including kidney failure and liver damage.

The Good Morning Britain presenter told her social media followers that although her family is going through an extremely difficult time, she has much to be thankful for.

At the weekend she shared a photo on Instagram of her neighbour who had helped make her Easter Sunday a little bit brighter by bringing round a beautifully decorated cake.

Kate said: ‘#happyeaster everyone – so hard that it’s the second we’ve lived through in Lockdown/restrictions and ofcourse our second without Derek home with us. But he is still here so we have so much to give thanks for and there’s lots to hope for isn’t there.

‘Our day started with sun shining and our wonderful neighbour who we call “Cakesuzy” bringing round the most amazing #easter cake ever she had made herself!!’

Former political advisor Derek, who has been married to Kate since 2005, is now out of his coma, however he struggles to talk and his muscles have depleted from remaining in a hospital bed.

The radio presenter, who shares children Billy and Darcey with her husband, has been keeping everyone updated on her husband’s health and recently opened up about her partner’s ‘agony’ as he fights to stay conscious in hospital.

‘Derek is an extreme case, he has a prolonged disorder of consciousness. There was reaction, before Christmas there was progress with words and communication,’ the newsreader said on The One Show.

‘I feel like I’m on a lifeboat and he keeps coming up, there are moments where he bubbles up and it feels like you have to feel him with positivity or he’s gonna sink down.’

The mum-of-two vowed to stick by her husband of 16 years, despite someone telling her she could ‘get out of the relationship because this wasn’t what she signed up for’.

‘He is still Derek. He is still him and he’s still that person that you love. But he will behave differently and he will be physically different. So, will I be ok?’ she said.

‘I won’t be delighted because I wouldn’t wish that on him.

‘I think it will be very tough on us both but he is, for better for worse…you know, I’m trying to look at it as a rather beautiful thing. I feel as though we might have to fall in love again.’
