New documentary Louis Theroux: Shooting Joe Exotic showed disturbing footage of Tiger King star ‘shooting a sick horse’.

The film, which aired on BBC Two on Monday night, saw Louis look back at the time he met with Joe for the 2011 documentary America’s Most Dangerous Pets, and the subsequent success of Tiger King in 2020.

It also contained shocking unearthed clips, including one sequence which showed Joe ‘ripping a day-old cub from its mother for Korean TV’.

More undercover footage was shot by an animal welfare group, which showed Joe ‘showboating as he prepares to shoot a sick horse on camera in 2013’.

The scenes showed Joe approach a horse and place a gun against its head after saying: ‘I am perfectly sane. Do not cross me.’

Louis said in the new documentary: ‘This footage, which we have chosen to obscure, Joe ran unedited. Watching it all back, there appears to be a growing indifference to the suffering of animals.’

‘It’s just a possible that Joe was always Joe, just with more cameras around,’ Louis added.

Meanwhile, the new documentary also saw Louis hit with a warning from the producers of Tiger King and threatened with ‘millions of dollars in damages’.

Joe reached world wide fame after becoming the focus of 2020 hit documentary Tiger King. The new film explored the success of the series and reflected on Louis’ experiences meeting Joe, who is currently serving a 22 year life sentence for the plot to kill his big rival Carole Baskin.

Louis also previously revealed Joe reached out to him shortly after the success of Tiger King, urging the filmmaker to tell his side of the story.

Louis Theroux: Shooting Joe Exotic is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
