Great Celebrity Bake Off’s Nadine Coyle opened up about a ‘close friend’ who is currently battling cancer in tonight’s final episode of the series and made a plea for more research into the disease.

The Girls Aloud star competed against Anneka Rice, John Bishop and Ade Adepitan to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith and take home the coveted star baker apron.

After sending viewers into meltdown with her pronunciation of the word ‘flour’, Nadine had a heart to heart with presenter Matt Lucas about cancer.

‘So, we’re here raising money and awareness for Stand Up to Cancer,’ Matt said. ‘Is this something that’s affected you in any way?’

‘Absolutely,’ Nadine replied. ‘I have a very close friend at the minute who is suffering from cancer.’

‘So it’s good to raise money and awareness,’ replied Matt.

‘Absolutely,’ agreed Nadine. ‘Because it’s terrifying. You’ve got the statistics and the more research there is and the more money and funding there is to do that, the better people’s odds are.

‘You never know when the next big break through is going to happen – and hopefully, very soon.’

In August 2020, Nadine’s Girls Aloud bandmate Sarah Harding revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, which had spread to other parts of her body.

Last month, Sarah said that her tumours have shrunk and that her treatment is heading ‘in the right direction’.

‘MRI scans at the end of December revealed that the tumours in my brain and in my lung have shrunk a bit with the treatment,’ she wrote in an extract of her new autobiography Hear Me Out.

‘With this news under my belt, I was able to enjoy a relaxing quiet Christmas with mum, and yes, I got plenty of lovely Christmas pressies.’

Doctors have told Sarah she is unlikely to see another Christmas.

The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer is available to stream on All 4.
