The Falcon and The Winter Soldier star Emily VanCamp has addressed the heavy ‘backlash’ that her character Sharon Carter and Captain America (Chris Evans) sparked when they shared an awkward kiss in Captain America: Civil War, ‘laughing’ off the fan reaction.

The new Marvel series on Disney Plus, starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan as the titular characters, sees Emily reprise the role of the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent for the first time in five years, reuniting with the pair on the fictional island of Madripoor.

The last time MCU fans saw Sharon was in Captain America: Civil War, when it was revealed that she was actually the niece of Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), a co-founder of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Steve Rogers’ love interest from the first Captain America film.

Sharon’s relation to Peggy made her budding romance with Cap undeniably cringeworthy for numerous fans, not to mention the fact that their smooch had an audience in the form of Bucky and Sam, who were watching from a car.

During a recent interview, Emily was asked about the fact that after her and Steve’s brief romantic fling, she seemingly disappeared from the MCU.

‘I know! There was quite a bit of backlash about that,’ she said regarding the kiss.

The Revenge star explained to Variety that when it comes to Sharon, ‘it was always trying to fit her in and these movies are just too big, and it’s completely understandable’.

‘To get to see who she’s become over this long period of time, and independent of Captain America as we know him, is really interesting to me. The intrigue for me was to see who is Sharon now,’ she said.

When pressed further on the ‘backlash’ to the infamous Captain America kiss, Emily added: ‘I mean, look, you have to laugh. Some of these storylines play and some of them don’t. But, you know, I thought that was an amazing film. It’s just one of those things.’

In episode three of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Sharon helps Bucky, Sam and prison escapee Baron Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) get away from bounty hunters on Madripoor.

While the trio leave the island with a new lead on the Flag-Smashers and the super-soldier serum the anti-patriotism group stole, Sharon decides to stay on Madripoor, which is run by an elusive individual called the Power Broker.

Something tells us this won’t be the last we see of Sharon in the series… or at least, that’s what we’re hoping.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is available to watch on Disney Plus with new episodes released on Fridays.
