Former Line of Duty star Neil Morrissey has teased that Nigel Morton could return to the crime drama in future, considering his character was never killed off.

On Tuesday’s edition of This Morning, Neil, 58, was interviewed by Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford alongside Gaynor Faye, his co-star in The Syndicate.

After chatting about the BBC series, which follows a betting syndicate as they’re cheated out of their £27million joint lottery win, Neil addressed whether or not Line of Duty fans will be reunited with Nigel on the procedural, now that series six is underway.

Neil starred in the first three seasons of Line of Duty, portraying Nigel from 2012 until 2016.

While Nigel had links to a corrupt police officer, having been a close friend of Tony Gates (Lennie James), the character never met his demise – which is why Neil reckons the door could be open for him to reprise his role.

‘I keep telling Jed Mercurio that I’m very much alive Jed. I just say, just bring me back and shoot me in the face, that’s what he does to all the stars, doesn’t he? Wipe me out, then that’s closure, isn’t it?’ Neil said.

While many fans may feel encouraged that this could mean Nigel will return at some point, there are some who believe he’s already shown his face since his series three exit.

At the end of Line of Duty series six episode two, police officer Joanne Davidson (Kelly Macdonald) is shown receiving a burner phone from a mysterious, bearded individual.

Although the bearded figure is never named, several fans drew the conclusion that it could be Nigel making his big comeback.

‘Isn’t this Neil Morrissey + fake beard?’ one Twitter user theorised.

Ted Hastings star Adrian Dunbar previously called for Nigel to be written back into the script.

‘I would really like to see Neil Morrissey’s character, Nigel, who’s still alive,’ he told the Radio Times. ‘He’s still out there. He’s still in possession of some information, I’m sure of it.

‘And I’d really like to see him back because more than anything else, he’s probably the best entertainment officer that any group ever had. For that alone, you’d really want Neil to be on the job. So you know, if you could put it out there, please…’

Line of Duty returns on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
