Comedian Chris Lilley launches Ja’mie King podcast and it’s just so random
Chris Lilley has announced he is launching a Ja’mie King podcast and honestly… she’s never been so random.
Ja’mie King – a fictional character created and played by Australian comedian Chris – was introduced in the mid-2000s, first in mockumentary miniseries We Can Be Heroes and later in sitcom Summer Heights High, both of which have since been removed from Netflix in Australia and New Zealand after sparking controversy over depictions of race.
In 2013, Ja’mie starred in her own eponymous show, Ja’mie: Private School Girl, the first episode of which featured her saying: ‘I’m so random, I can’t believe I just did that’, a phrase that has gone on to become one of the most circulated memes on social media.
Eight years since last portraying the schoolgirl, Chris, is adopting her persona once more in a new podcast, aptly named Ja’miezing.
In the synopsis for the podcast, Ja’mie reveals that since leaving her private school, she’s become an influencer, dubbing herself ‘Sydney’s own Gen Z icon’.
‘Life advice from Sydney’s own Gen Z icon and banter queen Ja’mie King. Star of several documentary series, Ja’mie is the ex-private school girl turned influencer, who everyone wants as their best friend,’ it states.
‘Subscribe for your weekly dose of wellness, fashion, beauty, relationship advice and more. She’s quiche, she’s wise, she’s unapologetic, and no offence but she’s literally Ja’miezing.’
In the Instagram post to announce the podcast, Chris shared a new picture of himself as Ja’mie, complete with her signature side-parted brunette locks.
The excitement was real following the announcement, with Family Guy writer Gary Janetti remarking: ‘This better be real.’
RuPaul’s Drag Race star Trixie Mattel commented: ‘Omg,’ while Canada’s Drag Race finalist Scarlett Bobo stated: ‘I MUST BE A GUEST!’
In the first episode of the new podcast, Ja’mie covered a wide array of topics, including ‘being woke’, ‘her nudes’ and ‘finding a man (with money)’, the episode description stated.
In June 2020, it was announced that Netflix had removed four of Chris’ shows from its services in Australia and New Zealand.
The four programmes – Angry Boys, Summer Heights High, We Can Be Heroes, and Jonah From Tonga – were all taken down as they featured characters that previously sparked questions about racial discrimination.
The decision came around the same time that Little Britain was removed from BBC iPlayer, Netflix and Britbox over the use of blackface.
Ja’mie: Private School Girl is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video.
