Expert reveals how often you should clean & replace everything in your bathroom – and you need new towels every 3 years

IF you’ve ever wondered how long you should hold onto bathroom bits, we have all the answers.

Drench.co.uk have enlisted their own expertise alongside the know-how of a cleaning expert, Henry Paterson, Senior Operations Executive at Housekeep to reveal how often we should be cleaning and replacing bathroom items.

An expert revealed we should be replacing our towels every three years[/caption]

Our bathroom is the second most used room in the home (after the kitchen) and its damp warm environment means you will want to keep germs at bay.

It may surprise you to learn that towels should be washed after every three uses, and replaced entirely every one to three years.

Henry Paterson, Senior Operations Executive at house cleaning service, Housekeep, advises: “To keep towels hygienic, make sure that they’re hung up to dry fully after each use, preferably in a non-humid environment.

“Hang them over a radiator or a towel rack, and definitely don’t leave them in a heap on the floor!”

Bath mat should be wash one a week and replaced every two years[/caption]

The expert adds: “Wash on a 40-degree wash with your usual laundry detergent, and then hang them to fully dry before you use them.”

Similarly, bathmats should be washed every three to seven days and thrown away after two years.

Studies have reportedly found that bathroom floors are the germiest areas in the bathroom, so it’s quite clear these germy mats should be washed regularly.

For bathmats with a rubber backing, the experts suggest spray these weekly with white vinegar, and then wash in cold water every three to four weeks.

This prevents bacteria build-up without damaging the rubber on your mat.

We should be cleaning the loo brush every week and replacing every six to eight months[/caption]

What’s more, it’s no secret your loo is filled with harmful bacteria, particularly if it’s not cleaned properly.

But what about your loo brush? Well, this could be just as bad.

We should be cleaning it every week and replacing every six to eight months – and we bet not many people are actually doing that.

Whenever you use a toilet brush, you should rinse it with the water from the flush.

Then, let the brush air dry by closing the toilet lid and letting it drip into the bowl.

However, to wash the toilet brush, soak it in a mixture of boiling water and bleach, then let it drip dry once a week.

Loofahs and toothbrushes should be replaced every one to three months, while you should be using a new disposable razor every week[/caption]

When it comes to our shower, we try our best to keep the shower screen squeaky clean, tackling any built-on limescale.

But your shower head is often forgotten altogether, and same goes for your curtain (if you have one).

Shower heads should be cleaned each month as they build up sediment from tap water, alongside bacteria and mould.

What’s more, you can simply place a plastic shower curtain in the washing machine on a 40-degree cycle, advises Paterson.

He recommends “add in a couple of clean towels too to protect the curtain, and provide some friction while the curtain washes.”

Fabric shower curtains can be placed in the washing machine, too. Just remember to check the label for specific instructions – and chuck them after six months.

Loofahs and toothbrushes should be replaced every one to three months, while you should be using a new disposable razor every week.

To make things simple, if you shave every day, replace your razor every one to two weeks.

Otherwise, replace your blade every two to three weeks. And, for those that shave twice a week, replace your blade every four or so weeks.

If you can’t quite part with your used toothbrush, why not use it to for cleaning grout or other cleaning tasks.
