Eamonn Holmes and Alex Beresford lead tributes to Prince Philip as Duke of Edinburgh dies aged 99

Eamonn Holmes and Alex Beresford have led tributes for Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, after it was announced he has died at the age of 99.

The Royal Family announced the news in a statement which read: ‘It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

‘His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.’

Good Morning Britain’s Alex Beresford tweeted: ‘So sad! Thoughts with the whole of the Royal family!’ while Kay Burley added: ‘RIP sir’.

Eamonn Holmes went on to say: ‘HRH Prince Phillip has died . #RIP [sic].’

X Factor stars Jedward shared a photo of the Queen and Prince Philip, writing alongside it: ‘Sending our condolences to you Queen Elizabeth @RoyalFamily Philip will always be in your heart.’

Anneka Rice was emotional at the news, as she wrote: ‘Found myself crying surprising deep snotty tears over the news of #PrincePhilip #dukeofedinburgh.’

The Apprentice star Lady Karren Brady added: ‘Very sad to hear that the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip has passed away. My thoughts are with HRH & the Royal family.’

Actress Kym Marsh wrote on Twitter: ‘RIP H.R.H Prince Philip. So sad. Thoughts are with the Royal family xx’.

Susanna Reid went on to say: ‘Sad news about the death of the Duke of Edinburgh. Such a huge loss for the Queen and his family. His has been her constant, steadfast support.’

Alison Hammond added: ‘RIP Prince Phillip , Our thoughts are with the Queen and family !!’

Elsewhere, This Morning was pulled off air on ITV and Michelle Visage has announced that The One Show will not be broadcast.

The Duke was recently treated at King Edward VII Hospital and St Bartholomew’s Hospital for an infection.

Funeral arrangements will be made in the coming days for the Duke, who was the longest-reigning consort in British history.
