Jim Carrey was randomly one of the fortunate few to witness Colin Firth and Hugh Grant’s infamous scrap on Bridget Jones’s Diary with his very own eyes during a visit to the set.

It’s been 20 years since Renee Zellweger first starred as Bridget, which immediately became one of the most celebrated roles of the 21st century, spawning a further two films Edge of Reason and Bridget Jones’s Baby.

When filming the first Bridget movie, she was famously dating The Mask star Jim – a true Hollywood power couple of the noughties.

Chatting to Cat Deeley – who is currently filling in for Lorraine Kelly on the host’s self-titled daily chat show – Sally Phillips, who starred as Bridget’s mischievous pal Shazza, cackled as she remembered filming the classic fight scene, which sees Bridget’s two rival love interests, Mark Darcey (Colin) and Daniel Cleaver (Hugh), frantically throwing punches across the streets of London

‘They booked a stunt co-ordinator but they both said these middle-aged white men wouldn’t have any idea how to fight, ‘ Sally told Cat. ‘They’d want to.’

As the scene played out, Sally noted: ‘This is them improvising, bitch-slapping, trying to kick and missing – it was hilarious.

‘We filmed this scene for a whole week and as you can see we’re not in it very much so we sat in deck chairs and watched Hugh and Colin slapping each other for a week.

‘And Jim Carrey was there because Renee was dating Jim at that point. He was bigger, harder and fitter than both of them and so I think they were even more embarrassed.’

Renee and Jim eventually split shortly after filming Bridget Jones’s Diary in 2000, but the Ace Ventura actor called recently called the actress the ‘love of his life’.

Sally spoke to Metro.co.uk this week where she admitted to having no idea who Colin Firth was when she filmed Bridget Jones and discussed some of the changes which would be made to the movie if it were made in 2021.

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
