Kate Garraway confirmed she will be returning to Good Morning Britain next week, after husband Derek Draper finally came home.
The 53-year-old spent more than a year in hospital – and months in a coma – following a battle with coronavirus that devastated his entire body.
As Kate detailed his tearful homecoming with children Darcey and Billy during an interview on GMB, she told Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh she will be in the studio very soon.
At the very end of their chat, she told her co-stars: ‘I’ll see you next week.’
The mum-of-two also became emotional as she opened up about the moment Derek returned home after his hospital journey.
While she explained there is a long way to go in his recovery – with the former lobbyist needing 24-hour care – she was thrilled at the update.
‘When we came in the door, as we pulled up – because I went to the hospital to help bring him home – I could see two little faces of Darcey and Billy looking out the window,’ she continued.
‘They ran out and ran forward and opened the door, and he immediately burst into tears. There was a lot of hugging.
‘They’re just delighted he’s home. I’m trying to balance the emotions of the next stage.
‘I don’t know, it just feels like the start of a huge chapter but a really, really big and important one.’
Kate became emotional at one point, and viewers watching on from home were left in floods of tears at their happy news.
Flocking to Twitter, one penned: ‘Kate Garraway is superwoman! Unbelievable what the family have been through. She is literally oozing happiness this morning
‘Amazing that Derek is home @kategarraway #gmb #KateGarraway #derek @benshephard.’
‘Sending hugs/love to @kategarraway, Billy and Darcey. Good news Derek is coming home. (You all are under the same roof),’ another agreed.
‘Happy tears of joys. Onwards & upwards.’
‘I’m so happy for Kate Garraway finally getting Derek home,’ a viewer replied. ‘It’s such brilliant news #GMB.’
As a Twitter user added: ‘Just burst into tears when I heard the news. So so happy for Kate Garraway and all the family. What amazing news. #Derekishome #GMB.’
Good Morning Britain continues on weekdays, at 6am, on ITV.
