Minari star Yuh-Jung Youn said her comment about British people being ‘snobbish’ came from personal experience.

The actress picked up a supporting actress Bafta for her performance in Minari on Sunday night.

Attending the ceremony from home, Youn was clearly bowled over by the win and said in her speech it was an honour to be recognised by the British.

She opened her acceptance speech by paying tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip after his death on Friday aged 99.

Youn said: ‘I would like to express my condolence for your Duke of Edinburgh.

‘This one, to be recognised by the British known as very snobbish people, and to be approved as a good actor, I am very happy.

‘Thank you for the voters. Thank you very much Bafta, very much.’

Speaking to press afterwards, she explained she had a fellowship at Cambridge when she was younger and said: ‘It felt very snobbish, but not in a bad way.

‘You have a long history and your pride. Being an Asian woman, I thought “these people are very snobbish”. That’s just what I felt, that’s my honest feeling.’

The 73-year-old has now won the Bafta and the SAG award for best supporting actress, but stayed coy about her chances of winning the Oscar later this month.

She said: ‘I don’t know anything about Oscars. I’m very famous domestic wise but not internationally. I don’t know what’s happening to me.’

The Baftas took place at Royal Albert Hall in London with only hosts Edith Bowman and Dermot O’Leary and a small handful of celebrity presenters in attendance.
