Kid Cudi has been showered with praise for wearing a floral dress on Saturday Night Live in homage to late Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain.

Cudi, real name Scott Mescudi, was the musical guest on this weekend’s SNL, which was hosted by Carey Mulligan.

The Day n Nite hitmaker performed two tracks, Sad People and Tequila Shots, and used both as an opportunity to raise awareness for suicide prevention through his fashion choices.

For his performance of Sad People, Cudi rocked up on-stage wearing a long Off-White floral dress with spaghetti straps. It appeared to be a nod to Cobain, who famously wore a similar one on the cover of the now-defunct magazine, The Face, in 1993.

Cobain died by suicide on April 5, 1994 at the age of 27.

Cudi, 37, then appeared in a knitted green cardigan for his performance of Tequila Shots. He also wore a white T-shirt underneath, which paid tribute to late comedian Chris Farley, a former SNL cast member.

Farley died following an overdose in 1997 at the age of 33.

The green cardigan was another homage to Cobain, who wore a similar one for Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged concert in 1993.

Cudi is known to be a huge fan of the late musician and got a tattoo in his memory last year.

Viewers couldn’t get enough of Cudi’s floral dress and heaped praise on his fashion statement.

One tweeted: ‘Kid Cudi is serving in this dress,’ while another added: ‘Okay so, Kid Cudi wore a dress on SNL tonight and he looked f***ing fabulous.’

Defending Cudi against any critics, one fan said: ‘If you’re out here hating on Kid Cudi because he was wearing a dress, grow up and understand that it’s not only an homage to Kurt Cobain but also him speaking loudly for everyone to be and love themselves for who they are.’

Another applauded: ‘Kid Cudi pulling the ultimate Kurt Cobain tribute on #SNL on the week of this death.

@KidCudi all about love and suicide prevention and awareness!!!’

Saturday Night Live returns to NBC in the US next Saturday.
