Warning: spoilers ahead for series six episode four of Line of Duty.

Line of Duty viewers were on the edge of their seats as they took in the action of series six episode four, with Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) and Chloe Bishop (Shalom Brune-Franklin) caught in the middle of an intense shoot-out after retrieving Jimmy Lakewell (Patrick Baladi) from prison.

In a new development while investigating the murder of journalist Gail Vella (Andi Osho), Steve, Chloe and AC-12 boss Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) listen back to a tape recorded by Gail, in which she is speaking to an unknown individual.

After hearing the person on the recording reference ‘balaclava men’, Steve realises it was Jimmy on the tape, a former solicitor from series four who is now in prison after AC-12 discovered his role in a big cover-up.

While he initially denies ever meeting Gail Vella to Steve and Chloe, Jimmy implies to Steve that he does know more than he’s letting on, but can’t say so in the vicinity of other individuals who may hear him.

Therefore, AC-12 organises a covert mission to pick Jimmy up from prison, with Steve in a white van flanked by two black vehicles.

Despite Jimmy having previously pleaded guilty to his crimes, Steve tells him that they plan on placing him in witness protection if he’s willing to speak about what he knows regarding Gail Vella.

But the mission doesn’t go to plan, as a suspicious vehicle spotted by Chloe begins following the convoy, with spikes then being placed across the road, causing the white van containing Steve and Jimmy to tip over.

An intense shoot-out ensues, with a sniper positioned in a window above the white van targeting Steve whenever he shows his face.

While many Line of Duty fans will have feared that Steve was going to meet his demise, he eventually manages to make a clean shot at the sniper in the window while lying on his back.

But the police force don’t escape the shoot-out unscathed, as one of the officers is fatally shot after trying to get to Steve and Jimmy.

Viewers were on the edge of their seats as they watched the dramatic scene unfold, with one person saying that they ‘held their breath for four minutes’.

‘Intense!!! Mother of god #LineOfDuty,’ another fan tweeted.

‘Just when I thought that this was going to be a slow episode, daaaaaamn son #LineOfDuty,’ someone else said.

‘#LineOfDuty outstanding tonight, think I was holding my breath for the last ten minutes,’ another stated.

‘Legit held my breath for the entirely of that big action scene in #LineOfDuty. God I love that programme,’ one Twitter user remarked.

Several fans praised Steve’s marksmanship, with one person writing: ‘me when Steve DID THAT. SHOTS ON SIR! What a hit son. What. A. Hit.’

‘My heart was racing then but Steve absolutely smashed it with that shot,’ another commented.

The closing scenes of episode four of Line of Duty have intrigued viewers to no end, with AC-12 discovering that Joanne Davidson (Kelly Macdonald) is related to an individual not revealed to viewers and Joanne being threatened by Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper).

Plus, Jimmy is murdered in prison in the full view of Ian Buckells (Nigel Boyle), who is warned by the murderer about the risks of being a ‘rat’.

Who is Jo related to? And will anyone realise that Ryan has her under his control?

Line of Duty returns next Sunday at 9pm and is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
