Line of Duty star Martin Compston’s BBC drama The Nest has reportedly been axed due to coronavirus setbacks and will not return for a second series.

The show first aired in spring 2020 and attracted eight million viewers, but the BBC drama allegedly won’t be returning for new episodes.

The Nest is a Glasgow-set thriller following Dan and Emily, a wealthy couple who, unable to conceive, ask an 18-year old girl, Kaya, to carry their child.

Martin starred in the series alongside the likes of Sophie Rundle, Mirren Mack, Fiona Bell, Shirley Henderson and Katie Leung.

An insider told the Daily Star: ‘It was decided they wouldn’t commission another run of The Nest.

‘The show was a really big deal for Martin. It was his chance to prove he can be a star away from Line Of Duty. And while he gave a great performance, it wasn’t enough.’

They added: ‘All channels are having to prioritise some shows and ditch others. The Nest is a casualty of that.’

The Nest is one of the projects Martin is known for outside of Line of Duty. He also starred in Ken Loach’s Sweet Sixteen, The Disappearance of Alice Creed and Traces.

Meanwhile, Martin has teased that episode four of the sixth series of Line of Duty is ‘one of the best’ creator Jed Mercurio has ever written.

So far in series six of the procedural, Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and her former AC-12 coworker Steve Arnott (Compston) have been trying to get to the bottom of the murder of journalist Gail Vella (Andi Osho) while also figuring out how corrupt police officers could be involved in her death.
