American Idol: Judge Luke Bryan replaced by Paula Abdul after he tests positive for Covid-19 ahead of live shows
American Idol judge Luke Bryan has contracted Covid-19 and will be forced to miss the first live show of the season tonight.
The Country singer revealed the news on Monday as he took to social media to update fans.
‘I’m sad to say I won’t be a part of tonight’s first live @AmericanIdol show. I tested positive for COVID but I’m doing well and look forward to being back at it soon,’ the 44-year-old tweeted.
Due to the unexpected positive result, an Idol OG will be stepping in to fill his place as Paula Adbul makes her return to the judges table.
Indeed, it’s the first time Paula has appeared on the reality singing competition show since it moved over to ABC in 2017.
A statement released on the Idol Instagram page confirmed: ‘Luke will be missed at our first #AmericanIdol LIVE show tonight, but he is resting now in quarantine at home and we’re wishing him a speedy recovery.
‘We’re so excited to announce @paulaabdul will be stepping in as a guest judge to join Lionel Richie and Katy Perry as we get closer to crowning a new winner!’
The Idol favorite will join regular judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie to help decide which contestants will be sent through to the next round by the stars.
Following America’s overnight vote, 10 contestants will be revealed from the top 16, leaving six contestants to perform for a chance at one of two spots picked by the judges, rounding out the top 12.
America Idol airs Sunday and Monday night on ABC.
