Gyms reopen: WWE NXT UK stars give top fitness tips and swap ‘wine bottles for weights’ as lockdown eases

Gyms have reopened this week as the lockdown restrictions ease, and WWE’s top NXT UK stars have given their fitness tips.

People across the country are delighted to see indoor gyms and leisure facilities open again – providing social distancing and other Covid-safe precautions are being taken – and the wrestling giant’s athletes will have been first in line.

French star Amale admitted: ‘When you’ve been out of the gym for so long, you can’t go as heavy as you used to.’

And Nina Samuels urged people to be sensible with targets they’re setting themselves after so long under a different workout regime.

She added: ‘It’s really important to listen to your body. Don’t focus on the numbers, focus on how you’re feeling.’

Like many people around the country, Nina had to get creative and adapt her workouts to work with what she had around her.

She explained: ‘Home workouts are something I’ve steadily had to get used to for sure. At the start of lockdown, I started off lifting wine bottles for weights and buying gallon water bottles and using them as kettlebells.’

Fellow NXT UK star Oliver Carter agreed: ‘I’ve been using 5kg rice bags at home! You just do what you can to stay healthy and fit.’

And Wolfgang urged: ‘You’re no longer just going to be lifting cans of beans and bottles of milk. Instead there will be proper weights in front of you – you can’t dive right in. Ease into it, do the things that you enjoy doing.’

The superstars will be delighted to be back to work, and they also revealed their most effective moves and the one they’ll be returning to back in the gym.

‘My go-to and first move I’ll do when I’m back in the gym? A deadlift,’ Amale revealed. ‘I love going heavy.’

Nina said: ‘I love an overhead press, it makes me feel super strong and powerful.’

And Carter explained: ‘A bench press was the first thing I did when I started in the gym and has remained my favourite. That’s where I’ll be heading to.’

*NXT UK airs every Thursday at 8pm on the WWE Network.
