Line of Duty series 6: Fans believe Steve secretly spoke to Jimmy in unaired scenes before his murder
*Warning: This episode contains major spoilers for Line of Duty*
Line of Duty delivered a knock-out blow on Sunday night, bringing us one of the best episodes fans had ever seen – but there’s one detail that many might have overlooked on first viewing involving Jimmy Lakewell (Patrick Baladi).
While most people have been attempting to figure out who Jo Davidson (Kelly Macdonald) could be related to after the episode’s bombshell revelation, it could be a more understated moment that holds the secret to the series.
The episode saw the return of Jimmy, who was last seen in series four.
The character was killed in prison shortly after being interviewed by AC-12, having survived an explosive shootout while in transit.
Jimmy seemed to refuse to pass on information about the OCG during his interview with AC-12, but viewers believe they’ve spotted something which could prove otherwise.
After deciding not to cooperate with the ongoing investigation, Jimmy shared a knowing look with DI Steve Arnott (Martin Compston), which suggests he could have passed on intel to the police while in the van.
Earlier in the episode, Steve spoke to Jimmy in the van before they were ambushed, trying to get him to talk about which case Gail Vella was looking into before she was murdered.
‘As I’m sure you realise DI Arnott, anything I said in these circumstances wouldn’t be evidential,’ Jimmy said.
‘Therefore, no-one could ever know who the information came from,’ Steve assured him.
Could he have spilled the beans in that moment, before the ambush arrived? Viewers seem to think so, and it’s definitely a theory we can get on board with.
One viewer wrote: ‘Lakewell definitely told Steve the information in the van. He just wasn’t going on the record with it, hence the nod.’
‘Jimmy Lakewell definitely said stuff to Steve in the van,’ another added.
Elsewhere, Line of Duty ended on a huge cliff-hanger on Sunday night – which has left fans pulling their hair out.
The most recent instalment closed with the revelation that DCI Joanne Davidson (played by Kelly Macdonald) is related to another person found in police records. But who could it be?
Line of Duty continues on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
