Good Morning Britain presenter Noel Phillips’ report from Minnesota was interrupted by gunfire in scary scenes on today’s programme.

Noel was broadcasting from Brooklyn Center in the aftermath of protests following the death of Daunte Wright, who was shot dead by a police officer on Sunday.

‘There’s a very tense standoff between protesters and police, as you can hear several gunshots…’ he said before a member of the crew interrupted him and warned: ‘We’ve got gunfire over there.’

Noel looked worried as someone off-camera then yelled: ‘Behind the cars. Now! Now!’

The crew then ran for cover, with a voiceover from Noel saying: ‘We heard 20-30 gunshots from a group of men towards the police.’

Later on in the programme, Noel was seen explaining the safety measures the team has taken to make his reporting from the ground possible.

‘As a precaution when doing our job we have to wear body armours to protect ourselves,’ he said as he unzipped his jacket to reveal his bulletproof jacket.

Daunte, 20, was shot after an officer meant to use a taser, but mistakenly drew her gun instead, Chief Tim Gannon told reporters.

The police department released video footage from a body camera that showed the policewoman shouting: ‘Taser, taser, taser.’

She then yelled: ‘Oh sh*t, I shot him.’

The officer was later named as Kim Potter who has worked for Brooklyn Center Police for 26 years.

Protests have flared up in a Minnesota city following the shooting, which took place some 10 miles from where George Floyd died last year.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
