Kate Garraway stopped an interview with Big Brother’s Pete Bennett as he became overcome with emotion talking about the death of his ex-girlfriend and close friend Nikki Grahame.

Pete and Nikki met in the Big Brother house in 2006 where they became romantically involved, with the pair often seen cuddling and comforting each other.

Nikki died aged 38 after a life-long battle with anorexia. She had been getting treatment for her eating disorder at a specialist clinic, fundraised by her fans and friends.

After revealing he rushed to hospital to see Nikki before her death, Pete joined Kate and Adil Ray and was visibly upset as he discussed the late Big Brother star being ‘stuck’ in a facility.

‘She was lonely, do you know what I mean?’ Pete said. ‘She was stuck in North London, do you know what I mean? All by herself. I’m lucky enough to be in Brighton where there’s a beach and lots of people around.

‘She was stuck there all by herself and she hasn’t got her coping mechanisms anymore. Her friends and routine.’

He added: ‘What’s there to look forward to?’

As Pete grew distressed, Kate interrupted: ‘Pete, we can see you’re rather upset.

‘Is talking about it upsetting you?’

Insisting that he was okay, Pete replied: ‘I’m alright don’t worry.’

Tributes have poured in for the beloved reality TV star, with her former partner Pete speaking out about her death in a heartbreaking video.

‘We got loads of money and the amount of love and support for Nikki was overwhelming,’ he said.

‘I thought to myself, yeah, we can save her. But it’s OK. she’s in a good place. She’s not suffering anymore.’

Holding a bottle of wine, Pete continued: ‘So I would just like to raise a f*****g glass, a f*****g bottle of wine, more like, for Nikki Grahame and all the love from us at Big Brother 7 that we really love you Nikki. You were a true winner, man. You were great. You f*****g rock it, babes.’

Nikki and Pete’s romance captured the nation’s heart as they began dating while appearing on their Big Brother series in 2006.

Despite splitting some time after the show, they remained good friends.
