Anna Maxwell Martin is set to return to Line of Duty as Detective Chief Superintendent Patricia Carmichael – and series creator Jed Mercurio has been teasing that it could be bad news for Ted Hastings.

Ted, played by Adrian Dunbar, faced a grilling from Patricia in series five after suspicions were raised about his conduct.

Judging by series creator Jed Mercurio’s comments, her return doesn’t bode well for the boss.

‘It’s not looking good for the Gaffer…,’ Ted captioned a picture of the character.

The most recent episode saw Ted threatened with early retirement – could Patricia be bringing about his possible exit from AC-12?

We’ll have to wait until Sunday to find out, but Mother of God we can’t wait.

Speaking about making her first appearance since series five, Anna said: ‘Pat’s back, I can’t remember what she’s doing there, nor would I be allowed to blab, but suffice to say she’s got some new clobber and she’s ready to bust some balls.’

Meanwhile, Line of Duty fans are still drawing breath after one of the biggest cliffhangers in the history of the series.

Sunday’s episode left fans speculating about who could be the mysterious blood relative of DCI Joanne Davidson (Kelly Macdonald).

The moment came after forensics searched Farida Jatri’s (Anneika Rose) flat and found DNA that matched a mystery person known to AC-12.

Fans have been doing their own detective work, too, after discovering a vital clue via the BBC’s subtitles.

Line of Duty continues on Sunday on BBC One at 9pm.
