Tomorrow the gripping new true-crime documentary Why Did You Kill Me? is dropping on Netflix. A story of false identities and gang wars, this is everything you need to know about the show.

The programme follows the case of Crystal Theobald, a mother-of-two who was shot dead while in her car in California in 2006.

The 24-year-old unfortunately became entangled in a gang retaliation after one of their own vehicles was shot at, even though she had no involvement with organised crime.

Her mother, Belinda Lane, was in the behind vehicle at the time of the shooting, which means her daughter was murdered right in front of her eyes.

‘I was just a mess. I was just so enraged, angry, sad, overwhelmed. I just didn’t even want to live. I just wanted to die,’ she told Eyewitness News in 2016.

Lane was determined to find answers, which led her to creating a fake Myspace profile to try find the people responsible.

‘I told her, “Baby girl, I promise you if it takes my last breath, I will get them; I promise you, you will have justice,”’ she explained.

‘It could have taken a lifetime. I never would have stopped.’

True to her word, Lane never stopped looking for her daughter’s killer and, 10 years later in 2016, she found something that would potentially help the case.

Lane decided to use her daughter’s photo on Myspace and went by the name Angel so that she could make contact with the gang members she thought were involved. One of those people was William Sotelo.

Over time it seemed that Motelo was falling for the woman that Lane had created, which is when she decided to break her cover and tell Sotelo she was going to find him.

After this exchange, Sotelo went on the run to Mexico, before the police managed to track him down and bring him back to the U.S. in May 2016.

They wouldn’t have been able to achieve this without the information that Lane gathered on social media about Theobald’s mother.

Describing the heartbreaking new documentary, Netflix said: ‘The line between justice and revenge blurs when a devastated family uses social media to track down the people who killed 24-year-old Crystal Theobald.’

The programme will hopefully provide some answer about the intricate case.

Why Did You Kill Me? will be available on Netflix from April 14th.
