Gary Lineker forced to clarify Alex Scott tweet amid claims she’s replacing Dan Walker on Football Focus
Gary Lineker has been forced to clarify a tweet about Alex Scott, after mistakenly announcing that she’s set to replace Dan Walker on Football Focus.
The broadcaster appeared to have confirmed the reports that Alex had taken over on the long-running BBC programme, only to backtrack from his comments on social media.
It’s been heavily rumoured that Alex is the one stepping up as the new host, although the news has yet to be confirmed by the BBC.
‘Congratulations and good luck @AlexScott with your new role presenting Football Focus,’ Gary wrote initially.
‘With 140 @englandlioness caps and about 350 trophies in the cabinet, I reckon you’ll do brilliantly.’
He later followed up the tweet by saying: ‘Apparently there’s nothing official yet. Saw it was trending so may have jumped in prematurely. I know nothing.’
It comes after BBC Breakfast presenter Dan announced his departure from the show after 12 years, stating ‘it’s time for someone else to take the reins’.
It’s been reported that former Chelsea and Arsenal star Alex, who is a regular on Match Of The Day 2, will be taking over the Saturday lunchtime show when Dan leaves at the end of the season.
Alex is also known for her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing in 2019.
She retired as a football player in 2017 and has since gone into presenting for both the BBC and Sky.
Metro.co.uk has reached out to the BBC for comment.
Football Focus airs Saturdays at 12pm on BBC One.
