Justin Bieber turned to religion as fame impacted his mental health: ‘I thought all the success was going to make everything good’

Justin Bieber swapped drugs for religion to conquer the depression sparked by his pop fame.

He made the decision to clean up his act while visiting an Irish castle, where he realised he was the man who had everything but happiness.

The moment of self-reflection led to the Peaches singer quitting his Purpose world tour in 2017 to reboot his life through his faith.

‘There was a sense of still yearning for more,’ he said. ‘It was like I had all this success and it was still like, “I’m still sad, and I’m still in pain. And I still have these unresolved issues”. And I thought all the success was going to make everything good.’

Sharing his former vices in a whiter-than-white get-up for America’s GQ, Biebs added: ‘For me, the drugs were a numbing agent to just continue to get through.’

The 27-year-old said he would ask himself: ‘Am I ever going to be able to live a normal life? Am I going to be too self-centred and ego-driven that I just, you know, make all this money and do all these things, but then I’m left at the end of my life alone? Who wants to live that way?’

He vividly recalls his spectacular surrounding on the Emerald Isle at the moment he vowed to change.

‘This old castle. Just like the most beautiful estate,’ he said. ‘With the trimmed hedges that are completely immaculate. It’s over this beautiful body of water. And I was there. And I was alone. And I was sad inside.’

With drugs, graffiti and driving offences all behind him, Justin is now a married man — to model Hailey, 24 — and a regular churchgoer.

He says his faith has led him to spend more time helping others rather than being self-absorbed. ‘I don’t want to let my shame of my past dictate what I’m able to do now for people,’ he added.

‘A lot of people let their past weigh them down, and they never do what they want to do because they think that they’re not good enough.

‘But I’m just like, “I did a bunch of stupid s***. That’s OK. I’m still available. I’m still available to help. And I’m still worthy of helping”.’

Often sharing his religious thoughts with his 170million followers, Justin says he’s not trying to convert them.

‘My goal isn’t to try and persuade anybody to believe in what I believe or condemn anybody for not believing what I believe. If it can help someone, great. If someone’s like, “Hey, I don’t believe that. I don’t think that’s true”, by all means, that’s their prerogative.’

Heroin habit was beyond a choke for Russ

Russell Brand was put on the path to giving up crack and heroin by an angry security guard who put him in a chokehold.

Describing his worst-ever gig, the 45-year-old comic said: ‘Up in bonnie Scotland I was making some observations.

‘I was asking, “If one person commits a murder does that mean we’re all socially responsible?” People didn’t like that! I didn’t say it that way, I think I said, “You are responsible for child murder”.

‘When security came out they got me in a rear naked choke and I felt my windpipe closing up and it totally changed my perspective. I went from, “All right, come on then”, to “Yeah, yeah, it’s over, I’m sorry” really quickly,’ he told the First We Feast podcast.

‘Those kind of things were happening with increasing regularity and expedited the process of me stopping taking crack and heroin.’

American Idol’s Katy Perry is just as happy with the ex factor after setting up a ‘modern family’ with her fiancé Orlando Bloom’s former wife.

Katy, 36, and Miranda Kerr screened their bond on Instagram Live when she helped the Aussie model plug her range of organic skincare.

Miranda, 37, was married to Orlando for three years from 2010 and they have a ten-year-old son, Flynn.

Daisies singer Katy said of her: ‘In our modern family, she’s probably the most health conscious. One of the great things about being close to Miranda is I get to try out all her products.’

Miranda, who has two more sons with husband Evan Spiegel, called motherhood ‘the best thing in the world’.

Katy and Orlando’s daughter Daisy was born seven months ago, and she agreed with Miranda, saying: ‘It’s the best job, it’s the most fulfilling.’

Madonna insisted there are no security guards in her entourage as she fired back at a troll during a debate about America’s gun violence.

The American Pie singer described the death of Daunte Wright, shot by police in Minnesota, as ‘unacceptable’.

One follower, Karen Gayler, responded: ‘I bet you have people with guns to protect you and your family… you do not live in the real world.’

But Madonna, 62, wasn’t having it and hit back: ‘B**** I don’t have any security or armed guards around me. Come tell me to my face how not real my world is. I dare you.’
