Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s WAP performance at Grammys hit with over 1000 complaints as it’s compared to ‘porn’
Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s jaw-dropping Grammy’s performance of their hit single, WAP, pulled in over 1000 complaints to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission).
The rappers performed the chart-topping single for the first time ever at last month’s ceremony and immediately caused a stir with viewers.
Since its release last summer, WAP – which stands for Wet Ass P**y – has been a topic of debate due to its sexualized lyrics and equally racy music video.
According to a Rolling Stone report, the FCC received more than 1,000 emails after some viewers felt the channel should not have televised the performance.
Many complainants were not comfortable with what they believed to be the objectifying nature of the visual presentation.
‘I felt violated with Meghan Stallion & Cardi B’s performance. I am pro sex-positivity and body positivity but this performance crossed the line into pornography,’ one complaint reportedly read, in part. ‘Many kids still awake at that time, and even non-consenting adults were unexpectedly staring at pure objectification of women at its finest.’
The complainant further added that many kids were still awake during this performance and witnessed ‘pure objectification of women’.
Another email mentioned in the report revealed how one viewer was ‘stunned’ to see Cardi B and Megan’s performance since it was meant to inspire women but it turned out to be a ‘disgusting display’.
The complainant further wanted to file a lawsuit against the ‘performers, the network and any and all persons, corporations’ involved.
Interestingly, last year saw Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s halftime show at the Super Bowl cause the FCC to receive over 1312 complaints.
Cardi recently defended her performance after TV host Carlson said it was ‘hurtful’ to children.
WAP was released last summer and topped the charts in both the UK and on the US’ Billboard Hot 100.
Criticism was immediately levied at the song, which sees Cardi and Megan talk explicitly about being pleasured by their men.
