Alex Rodriguez is clearly dealing with his split from Jennifer Lopez like the rest of us handle heartbreak – by whacking on the saddest Coldplay song ever and looking at old photos.
Yesterday the pair announced the end of their engagement with a joint statement to USA Today, confirming they were indeed going their separate ways after recent speculation.
The former couple said: ‘We have realised we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so.
‘We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and one another’s children.
‘Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.’
While all is amicable in this break-up, ARod has been roasted on social media after sharing a clip as the announcement went out of him listening to Coldplay while looking at photos of his beloved.
Not just any Coldplay song though, but Fix You, universally known as the most tear-jerking song in Coldplay history.
And he didn’t just add the song to the video through Instagram’s built-in player – as he moved the camera over a photo of JLo as well as an images of their two names written in the sand, also tagging the star – he appeared to be listening to the song IRL as the most heart-shattering part of it played in the background.
You know the bit: ‘Tears streaming…down your face…’
Yeah, it’s heavy.
And while we’re all for dealing with a breakup the best way you know how, apparently people on social media thought it was all, well, all a bit too much.
One mused on Twitter: ‘ARod, a 45 year old man, posting a breakup video to Fix You by Coldplay was not on my bingo card for today.’
The mocking was strong, as another wrote: ‘Arod uploading an Instagram story yesterday showing photos of him and Jlo while Coldplay plays in the background and then announcing their breakup today is some STRONG middle school energy.’
And some even felt the need to kick the boot into Coldplay while they were at it, despite Fix You being an absolute tune: ‘Arod the only reason Coldplay generating streams right now.’
Meanwhile, JLo’s most recent post to Instagram is her looking like the boss she is.
It’s quite the juxtaposition, if we do say so ourselves (albeit posted several days ago).
It comes weeks after reports that Jennifer and Alex had broken up to due busy work schedules and claims that he had been spending time with Southern Charm star Madison LeCroy.
However, the couple slammed the reports and said they were working on their relationship.
They told TMZ: ‘All the reports are inaccurate. We are working through some things.’ The publication had also been told the ‘things’ they’re working on have ‘nothing to do with a third party’.
Another insider told People: ‘They were having problems before she left for the Dominican Republic. Filming made it worse because they haven’t been able to see each other much in person. But they love each other and want to keep working on things.’
Things seemed to be getting back on track as they were seen being affectionate with each other when Alex, 45, flew over to the Dominican Republic to spend time with Jennifer, 51, as she filmed her upcoming rom-com Marry Me.
The stars confirmed their relationship in March, 2017, making things Instagram official the following month.
They got engaged two years into their romance, with the New York Yankees star getting down on one knee while on a romantic trip to the Bahamas.
Through their relationship, they created a big blended family with Jennifer’s children Max and Emme, 13, from her previous marriage to Marc Anthony; and Alex’s kids Natasha, 16, and Ella, 12, from his former marriage to Cynthia Scurtis.
