Boris Johnson set to swap more of his fleet of gas-guzzling ministerial motors for electric cars within months

It comes as he tries to woo world leaders ahead of his COP26 eco summit in Glasgow in November.

The PM has given the green light to accelerate the overhaul of Whitehall’s car service as part of his green agenda.

The Department for Transport has a new load of official cars on order that are expected to arrive in the next month.

Ministers have already promised the entire government car fleet will switch to electric by 2030, in line with plans to ditch petrol and diesel across the UK.

A quarter of the approximately 90-strong central government vehicles have to be electric by next year, putting pressure on them to act now.

The PM’s vow to switch from petrol will show fellow world leaders like US President Joe Biden he is determined to lead the globe on slashing emissions.

It is expected No10 will opt for British-made Jaguars rather spend taxpayers’ cash abroad.

Jaguar has pledged to be all-electric by 2025, but the PM’s much-loved XJ model will not be part of that range. His car will have to be replaced with another model instead.

Boris’s armoured, custom-made Jag is driven by specialist Met officers and capable of withstanding bombs, guns, and can run on flat tyres.
