Helen McCrory and Damian Lewis’ marriage as Peaky Blinders actress dies aged 52
Peaky Blinders star Helen McCrory has died at the age of 52 after a secret battle with cancer, with her husband Damian Lewis confirming the sad news on Twitter.
Sharing a heartfelt statement, the actor, 50, referred to his late wife as a ‘beautiful and mighty woman’.
He wrote: ‘I’m heartbroken to announce that after an heroic battle with cancer, the beautiful and mighty woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully at home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family.
‘She died as she lived. God we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives. She blazed so brightly.
‘Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you.’
Helen and Damian met when they were both performing in Five Gold Rings at London’s Almeida Theatre in 2003.
The two married in July 2007 in a ceremony held at Kensington and Chelsea Registry Office.
They shared two children together, daughter Manon, 14, and son Gulliver, 12 – with the family living in London together, and they also have a home near Sudbury, Suffolk.
While Damian starred in crime series Life, the four lived in Los Angeles between late 2007 and early 2009, before moving back to London.
Helen had previously opened up about her marriage to Damian, stating it was love at first sight.
Speaking to Woman’s Weekly last April, she explained: ‘He just made me laugh a love. And still does. Of course, everyone in life wants someone to love and be loved by, but I think until then I was always just engrossed in work.’
The actress also recalled her husband throwing a surprise party for her 50th birthday, as she continued: ‘We were in a hotel and I was in bed with a really, really bad cold and said, “Let’s just get a burger and a bottle of red wine and watch telly”, and he said, “OK”.
‘But then I thought, “No, I’m 50!” so we got out of bed and went downstairs – and there was everybody waiting for me!’
And in a 2017 interview with The Telegraph, Helen insisted that Damian has never given her a reason to be jealous, despite his success in the entertainment industry.
When asked if she ever feels envious of his female co-stars, she responded: ‘No. But that’s not because he hasn’t worked with gorgeous people – it’s because he’s never given me any reason to.
‘You know… he’s lovely, otherwise I wouldn’t have chosen him. If I don’t think he’s lovely, we’re all screwed.’
