‘A Very Difficult Position’ – Washington Football Team Head Coach Ron Rivera on Potentially Drafting a QB

sFor the Washington Football Team, 2020 was a season unlike any other. With a new identity and new head coach in Ron Rivera, the team looked to make it back to playoffs for the first time since 2015.

And through what was a difficult year for the NFC East overall, WFT made it to the playoffs, topping their division with a 7-9 losing record.

The Washington Football Team was a force to reckon with on defense. But when it came to offense, the team often struggled due to the shortcomings of their quarterback.

With Rivera experimenting to find his team a QB1, WFT started four QBs through the course of the season. Namely Dwayne Haskins, Alex Smith, Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke.

While the team had varied success with its QBs, it decided to let go of Smith and Haskins to bring in veteran journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick

The battle for the QB1 role is expected to be between Fitzpatrick and Heinicke who put on quite a show in the side’s only playoff game last season.

Could Washington Football Team draft a QB?

Interacting with the media, Rivera and WFT GM Martin Mayhew were asked about the franchise potentially drafting a QB. Rivera responded to this by saying that drafting a QB is easier said than done.

“It’s a very difficult position… As everybody knows, where you’re being picked is no guarantee of success. So a lot of it has to do with who you pick. A lot of it has to do with that person’s makeup,” Rivera said.

“A lot has to do with your team. Do you have the ability to protect that player, and do you have playmakers around that player? There are a lot of factors that go into it,” he added.

Mayhew though kept his cards close to himself revealing very little about his side’s draft strategy.

“It’s a really good question and one I won’t answer for strategic reasons. We feel very confident and comfortable with the quarterbacks on our roster right now.”

Though WFT looks unlikely to draft a QB in the upcoming draft, who would you pick as a potential long-term QB for the franchise?
