Alfred Molina reveals worries about reprising Doc Ock role in Spider-Man: No Way Home
Alfred Molina has revealed his worried about returning as Doc Ock in Spider-Man: No Way Home, as he is a lot older than he was in the previous film.
The actor, 67, will reprise his role as villain Dr Otto Octavius in the upcoming movie, but had been worried about looking ‘old’ in the role which was introduced in Spider-Man 2 in 2004.
He revealed to Variety: ‘It was wonderful. It was very interesting going back after 17 years to play the same role, given that in the intervening years, I now have two chins, a wattle, crow’s feet and a slightly a slightly dodgy lower back.’
Alfred added that director Jon Watts had reassured him that the age difference between the two films would not be obvious thanks to some CGI trickery.
‘He just looked at me, and said, “Did you see what we did to Bob Downey Jr. and Sam Jackson?”’, he joked.
Discussing de-aging in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, Alfred added: ‘They made Robert De Niro’s face younger, but when he was fighting, he looked like an older guy.
‘He looked like an old guy! That’s what that’s what worried me about doing it again. I don’t have the same physicality that I had 17 years ago, that’s just a fact.’
However, the thing that swayed him into playing the role again was the fact the ‘tentacles do all the work’ for him and he only had to have ‘a kind of mean look on my face’ while the arms did all the destruction.
Alfred had played Dr Otto Octavius, who was set to be a mentor for Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker when an accident in the lab turned him into the villain Doctor Octopus.
The character, known as Doc Ock for short, was named after the four mechanical arms which were fused onto his back.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled for release on December 17, 2021.
