Rapper DMX is to be honoured by his friends and family at a memorial in New York City next week following his death.

The rapper, real name Earl Simmons, died at the age of 50 after a heart attack after an alleged drug overdose.

A service will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday, April 24.

The arena, which can hold 19,000 people, will be closed to the public with the star’s friends and family allowed to attend, as only 10% capacity of the venue is permitted due to the pandemic.

However, the event will be live-streamed for fans around the world to view, according to TMZ.

A smaller group of the musician’s loved ones will attend a private funeral at a church in New York the day after on Sunday.

The star performed one of his last big shows at the Barclays arena in June 2019 during the Masters of Ceremony event.

It has been reported there are plans to place a statue or name a street after DMX in New York.

The memorial will take place two weeks after his death, with his family telling US publication People in a statement at the time: ‘We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name or Earl Simmons, passed away at the age of 50 years old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days.

‘Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him.

‘Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever. We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time.’
