‘Impatience’ Botched Imola F1 Qualifying: Sebastian Vettel

We are into the second round in Imola and Sebastian Vettel has not found his zone yet. After his nightmare debut for Aston Martin in Bahrain, the German did not fare much better in the qualifying today. And he attributed his less-than-ideal outing to his lack of patience.

After a closely contested Q2 session, Vettel ended up in the 13th position. Once again, his teammate, Lance Stroll, pipped him as the Canadian made the cut for the final session.

He is still not up to grip with the AMR21 car. But he tried to push the limit too much out of impatience and ‘lost a little bit.’

“Obviously I’m not a very patient guy, so I don’t want to wait. But it is getting a lot better. On a track like this in particular, you need the ultimate confidence to extract everything. I’m not yet there, but it’s only the second race, so I guess I have to be a bit more patient,” said Vettel post-qualifying.

Sebastian Vettel yet to hit the sweet spot with car set-up

The modern-day F1 cars are a lot more complicated than what Vettel experienced during the beginning of his career. When he last switched teams from Red Bull to Ferrari, he had a much easier adaptation process.

With his current car, Vettel is yet to find his feet. When he does, he believes that the results will reflect on track, “The car is quite different to what I was used to in the past. There’s a couple of things, nowadays with tyres, and how you set up the car etc, can make quite a big difference.”

“So that’s why I think it’s taking me maybe a bit longer than normal. Honestly in all fairness as well, for the ultimate tenths that you’re fighting in the midfield, then you see the consequence straight away.”

Hopefully, the German is able to express himself freely in the car after a couple of races. There are many suggestions that he is over the hill as an F1 driver. The onus is on him to quieten the detractors.
