The PlayStation 5 Breaks Major Sales Record in the United States
The PlayStation 5 just became the fastest selling console in United States history. To add to this, it has broken this record in terms of both unit and dollar sales. The fact that the PlayStation 5 has been out for only six months only accentuates Sony’s remarkable achievement.
The console initially released on November 12, 2020, and sold out in seconds at retailers like Amazon and BestBuy. New features and the revolutionary Dualsense 5 controller are only part of the reason for this. As much as there is a high demand for the console, Sony is finding it exceedingly difficult to provide the supply.
Why is the PlayStation 5 so hard to get your hands on?
Currently, the Japanese manufacturer is facing a shortage of semiconductor chips. These chips are required in almost every electronic item; however, since the pandemic, they have become very scarce. Sony’s Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki said, “We expect PS5’s high demand to continue into next fiscal year and will do our best to meet that demand, we will make efforts to secure enough materials.”
This shortage cannot be blamed solely on Sony, as it has also affected industries aside from the gaming industry. Despite the shortage of materials, Sony continues to have ambitious goals.

In 2020 itself, the console sold 4.5 million units across the world. Based on their previous sales, Sony said that it was on course to sell 7.6 million units by the end of the 2021 financial year. They only plan to expand on this growth by bringing the sales up to 14.8 million units in the current fiscal year ending March 2022.
The only console that seems to be keeping up with the PlayStation 5 is the Nintendo Switch. NPD’s Executive director Matt Piscatella took to Twitter to reveal that the “Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollars during the month of March.”
US NPD HW – Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollars during the month of March. In the first quarter, Nintendo Switch was the unit sales leader while PlayStation 5 ranked first in hardware dollar sales.
