Watch: Offensive Linesman Penei Sewell Talks About His Road to the 2021 NFL Draft

Offensive linesmen are one of the most crucial cogs of an NFL franchise. That was well documented during the Kansas City Chiefs’ defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV. And that’s also exactly why an offensive linesman like Penei Sewell is in high demand.

Regarded as the best offensive linesman in the upcoming draft class, Oregon’s 6’6″, 330 pound left tackle is a specimen to behold. Despite his size, Sewell is blessed with incredible athleticism.

Agile and quick to respond to pass rushers, Sewell is a sure-shot top 10 pick in the upcoming NFL draft. The road to the NFL though hasn’t been an easy ride for Sewell.

Overcoming various challenges, the offensive tackle recently talked about his road to the NFL Draft 2021.

Penei Sewell rearing to go in the NFL

During a chat with NFL Network, Penei Sewell talked about the work he’s ready to put in to achieve his dreams in the NFL.

“Reminding myself of where I came from gives me a whole different motivation and drive to make this dream possible.”

Born in the village of Malaeimi in American Samoa, Sewell said that his humble beginning pushed him on to succeed.

“There was 12 of us living in a one bedroom, one bathroom house. And my siblings and I being so little at the time, the energy was through the roof. So you can imagine mom and dad running around and trying to keep us in order,” he said.

“It just shaped me into the person that I am today. Reminding myself of where I came from gives me a whole different motivation and drive to make this dream possible,” he added.

With the Orgeon Ducks, Sewell started off as a day one starter at the left tackle position. But it was in 2019 that the O-linesman really started drawing attention.

Sewell played 13 games and allowed zero sacks. Named a unanimous first-team All-American, the offensive tackle also won the Outland Trophy – an award given to the best college football interior linesman in the US.

All this in his sophomore year. Though Sewell decided to sit out the 2020 season amid concerns regarding COIVD-19 and instead focused on preparing himself for the upcoming draft.
