American Idol contestant Hunter Metts breaks down in tears as he messes up song lyrics while performing live on stage

Hunter belted his heart out to the ballad, and when he messed up the ending he was overwhelmed with emotion.

The singer was comforted by show judge Katy Perry, who said: “Hunter, perfection is an illusion. It doesn’t matter.

“It shows you are human and vulnerable.”

Hunter has been a beloved candidate for the title during season 19, as both the judges and fans have rooted for him throughout.

The rising star previously auditioned for Idol, but was unable to move forward because his sister worked for Disney, ABC’s parent company.

Her position was seen as a conflict of interest, but in an effort to help her brother live out his dreams, she resigned.

“This is my third time trying to come to American Idol,” he told the judges earlier this season.

“My first time, [my sister] was currently working at Disney, and it was seen as a conflict of interest. The following year when I expressed interest in doing it again, she quit her job.”

Prior to his time on the show, Hunter worked as a Software Developer for Owen Technologies, LLC, in Nashville.

This season has left fans in shock, after Paula Abdul returned to guest judge 11 years after her departure from the show.

The famed choreographer joined Lionel Richie and Katy Perry as she filled in for Luke Bryan last week while he was battling Covid.

During the episode, Ryan Seacrest facetimed another Idol legend, Randy Jackson, 64, so the group could reunite.

Fans were stunned when shortly after, the Straight Up singer claimed that longtime host and producer Simon Cowell was an “STD.”

“It’s so good to see you!” She told Randy, adding: “We’re all back, now we just need the STD.”

An awkward silence ensued as the live audience and the other judges were floored by the statement.

Many took to Twitter to share their opinions over the comment, one writing: “If I had to guess, Paula Abdul was not supposed to make an STD joke like she just did. Welcome back, Paula.”

“PAULA ABDUL JUST CALLED SIMON COWELL “THE STD” ON AMERICAN IDOL HELP ???” another ranted.

“LMAOOOO PAULA ABDUL CALLING SIMON COWELL AN STD ON LIVE TV LOVE THIS,” a third laughed.

A fourth agreed: “PAULA ABDUL JUST CALLED SIMON COWELL AN STD ON AMERICAN IDOL. I AM SCREAMING OMG.”

Last week, another unexpected moment arrived when contestant Wyatt Pike left the show despite making it into the top 12.

He shared a photo to Instagram to announce the news, writing: “I had to leave the @AmericanIdol competition for personal reasons but am so thankful I get to play music for the rest of my life.”
