X-Files fans have gone wild after Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny enjoyed a low-key reunion.

The former co-stars – who appeared as FBI special agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder respectively in the sci-fi show from 1993 to 2002 – hung out recently, and it’s safe to say everyone loved seeing them back together again.

Gillian shared an adorable photo on Instagram as she and David cuddled up for a selfie with her new pup Stella.

She captioned the snap: ‘Stella made a new friend today.’

Although the series ended in 2002, the duo reprised their roles in spin-off films between 1998 and 2008, before reuniting for a shorter two-season revival from 2016 until 2018.

Not surprisingly, fans were delighted to see Gillian and David hanging out, and they flooded the comments with sweet and hilarious messages.

One follower wrote: ‘I’ve just died a thousand deaths from one photo!!’

Another joked: ‘Can’t you just marry already?’

And a different fan added: ‘The way you knew this would break the internet.’

Things could have been very different, as David recently admitted he almost turned down the role of Mulder because he wasn’t sure there’d be much longevity to the show.

Appearing on Literally! With Rob Lowe, he said: ‘X-Files, this is about extra-terrestrials. How long can it go?

‘It’s a good pilot but you’re either going to see the aliens or [not]. I wasn’t interested in conspiracy theories, and I was perfectly willing to just say, “I’m going to have to pass on that pilot, because I said I’d do this other project.”

‘It’s scary to think back on, if you didn’t open this door, or you took that left instead of that right. It’s like, none of it had to happen. You talk about actors being dumb… well, that was me.’

Last summer, Fox revealed plans for an animated spinoff called The X-Files: Albuquerque – and while creator Chris Carter will serve as executive producer, Gillian and David weren’t attached at the time.

Back in 2018, Gillian suggested she was done with the role as she said: ‘It’s time for me to hang up Scully’s hat. It just is. I’m finished and that’s the end of that.’
