Line of Duty fans believe they’ve finally worked out the identity of H after discovering out a cryptic clue – and it’s one of the most intriguing theories we’ve heard yet.

While the episode pointed to the family connection between Jo Davidson (Kelly Macdonald) and Tommy Hunter (Brian McCardie), and delved deeper into the possibility that Chief Constable Philip Osborne (Owen Teale) could be the guilty party – there was one small detail which could point to the identity of H.

As the search for the fourth bent copper at the heart of the police service hotted up following another unmissable episode on Sunday night, viewers have turned their suspicions on someone new.

A number of viewers now believe that the returning Detective Chief Superintendent Patricia Carmichael is the illusive bent copper that AC-12 has been looking for.

As one Twitter user wrote: ‘I think Carmichael is H. Jimmy Lakewell told Steve to look more into the race claim. Take away Raceclaim from Carmichael and what do you have left? H.’

Could Patricia be H?

It’s speculative, granted, but could the fans be onto something? If the theory is correct, then it means senior anti-corruption Detective Chief Superintendent Patricia could be the one AC-12 have been searching for.

For background, in the audio recording featuring the interview between Gail Vella (Andi Osho) and Jimmy Lakewell (Patrick Baladi) uncovered in episode four of series six, Jimmy urged her to look past the racist element of her investigation.

‘Sometimes the reason for the cover up are more obscure,’ Jimmy said.

‘It’s got to be pretty bad if you’d rather go with the story that you’re a bunch of racists,’ referencing a police cover up following the killing of Karim Ali.

The events of episode five could back it up too. Patricia has been put in place to take over the new, highly reduced and re-structured anti-corruption unit from Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) – could be she making it easier for the bent coppers on the force to get by unscrutinised?

Patricia was also fast-tracked to the top in her 40s. Could her meteoric rise be due to her connections with the shady corrupt coppers embedded in the police?

There are plenty of other social media users that believe Patricia is the one Ted and the gang have been looking for all this time.

Meanwhile, Line of Duty fans turned detectives themselves after the shocking end to episode five, as Kate Fleming and corrupt copper Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper) ended up in a tense standoff.

However fans think they know what the outcome will be thanks to a teaser trailer that was released in March ahead of the start of series six

Line of Duty airs on Sunday nights at 9pm on BBC One.
