Piers Morgan has blasted his beloved Arsenal after last night’s shock European Super League announcement.
The former Good Morning Britain star – who is very passionate in his support for the North London team – has reacted furiously after the Premier League’s so-called ‘big six’ revealed plans to form a breakaway ‘mid-week competition’.
Initially responding to the news which came after the Gunners rescued a last-minute draw with relegation-threatened Fulham, he wrote: ‘Shocked & stunned by this new Super League of the ‘biggest & best’ teams in Europe. How the hell have Arsenal managed to blag our way in?’
He later added that the controversial decision for Arsenal – along with Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur – to be part of the spin-off league would be enough for him to stop supporting them.
He tweeted: ‘If you proceed with this arrogant elitist shameful Super League nonsense @Arsenal – then you can stick my 4 season tickets up your Arsenal.’
The announcement regarding plans for the league – which would also include Italia clubs AC Milan, Juventus and Inter Milan, and Spanish teams Barcelona, Real Madrid And Atletico Madrid – has been met with widespread criticism from fans, pundits and celebrities.
Countdown lexicographer Susie Dent shared a new Word of the Day on Twitter amid the uproar, and although she didn’t mention what her tweet was in relation to, the timing led her followers to believe she was shading the new league by giving her take indirectly.
She wrote: ‘Word of the day is “ingordigiousness”: extreme greed; an insatiable desire for wealth at any cost.’
Like Piers, Steve Brookstein – who won the first ever series of The X Factor back in 2004 – took aim at Arsenal, pointing out that the club hasn’t actually won the Premier League since the 2003/04 season.
Sharing a shot of the current table, which has the Gunners in ninth place, he said: ‘The last time you won the league I won X Factor. You’re more embarrassing than my career. Chancers.’
And Dermot O’Leary shared an artist’s picture of Arsenal legend David Rocastle alongside the player’s famous quote, which reads: ‘Remember who are you are, what you are and who you represent.’
Dermot tagged the club on Twitter, and captioned the post: ‘Forgetting something?’
Actor Daniel Mays added: ‘I had a horrible nightmare about Europe’s top football teams forming a Super League…… oh, wait a minute. #BoycottEuropeanSuperLeague (sic)’
Liverpool fan Danny Miller also blasted the proposals, and branded them an ‘absolute disgrace’.
‘Absolute disgrace. As if football isn’t corrupt enough worldwide, this happens. Don’t even enjoy watching it anymore, never mind supporting it. But this is the beginning of the end. Well done FSG,’ he wrote, referencing the club’s owners.
‘Genuinely, I’ll go and support @StockportCounty if it sticks’.
And former Strictly star Kevin Clifton – who had already agreed with former Manchester United player Gary Neville’s blunt assessment on Sunday – responded after Spurs sacked manager Jose Mourinho on Monday morning.
Days before the team face Manchester City in the League Cup Final on April 25, Kevin tweeted: ‘Just before a cup final. Shows just how meaningless anything outside the super league is to these 6 teams now’.
