Selma Blair has opened up about her battle with multiple sclerosis, saying she’s comfortable in her own body and hopes to inspire others.

The actress, 48, revealed her disability in an Instagram post in 2018 and has said in the past how the chronic disease changed her life.

The condition can affect the brain and spinal cord, and can cause problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation or balance, and Selma has been suffering with flare-ups since the birth of her son in 2011.

She struggled to get doctors to take notice but was finally diagnosed following an MRI scan in 2018 after 20 MS-related lesions were found on her brain.

And, in a new interview with Town & Country, the star says she hopes to be an inspiration to others going through the same.

She said: ‘I am aware my challenges affect other hopeful or isolated people and a few of them may be joyful snobs like me.

‘I’m very comfortable in my own body, mostly because I am now making a deeper positive connection with it.

‘I am fascinated by this body and this life. I am humbled and pleased to be any inspiration for people.’

Selma posed with a cane for the magazine’s stunning photoshoot as she wore a flowing pink dress while standing barefoot.

In another image, the actress can be seen peering towards the camera from behind some hot pink ruffles while wearing a glittering blue and silver ring on her finger.

In another, she can be seen with a yellow flower in her hair while wearing a matching rain mac for the May edition of the publication.

Selma has previously said how her illness causes her to ‘fall’ and ‘drop things’, and that her doctor only realised what was going on when she fell over in front of him.

In her 2018 Instagram post, she wrote: ‘You can’t get help unless you ask. It can be overwhelming in the beginning. You want to sleep. You always want to sleep. So I don’t have answers.

‘You see, I want to sleep. But I am a forthcoming person and I want my life to be full somehow. I want to play with my son again. I want to walk down the street and ride my horse.

‘I have MS and I am ok. But if you see me, dropping crap all over the street, feel free to help me pick it up.

‘It takes a whole day for me alone… I have probably had this incurable disease for 15 years at least. And I am relieved to at least know.’

Town & County’s May edition is on sale from Tuesday 27 April.
