Olly Alexander was left ‘giggly and red’ on The One Show after being confronted about rumours of him being the new Doctor Who.
The Years and Years singer has become a firm favourite to take over the Tardis from Jodie Whittaker in recent months, after his widely praised role of Ritchie on It’s A Sin.
Appearing on The One Show to talk about his new single, Alex Jones and Michael Ball first tried to butter him up with a surprise message from Shania Twain, before jumping in with the killer question.
‘I need to talk about some rumours,’ Alex told him.
‘Ooooh, go on,’ Olly joked, before Michael Ball jumped in.
He said: ‘I’m desperate to know. No, I’m sure it’s going to happen. You’re the next Doctor Who.’
Laughing it off, Olly coyly replied: ‘Do you think if I was, I would tell you?’
‘We just got Shania Twain! So I think that’s a fair trade off,’ Michael argued.
Continuing to laugh, the 30-year-old said: ‘What an amazing role that would be, but I don’t think it’s happening any time soon.’
His comments fell on deaf ears for Michael though, who added: ‘I’ve gone money on it. He’s giggly.’
‘You’ve made me go so red!’ Olly admitted. ‘Oh my Gosh.’
It’s been reported that Jodie Whittaker has decided to leave the beloved show, after joining the cast in 2017 as the first female regeneration of the Doctor.
This has yet to be officially confirmed by the team.
John Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack Harkness on Doctor Who, tipped Olly Alexander for the leading role, telling Lorraine Kelly: ‘Olly would be amazing. He’s quirky, he’s fun.
‘He’s a lovely actor, and I think he would make a wonderful doctor.
‘It would be fabulous!’
The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.
