Glow Up series 3: Meet make-up professional judges Val Garland and Dominic Skinner
BBC’s make-up competition Glow Up is returning for a third series and the competition will prove to be more fierce than ever.
While we sit at home with a face pack on dreaming of having the creative minds that come with being one of the 10 make-up artists chosen for the latest batch of episodes, we thankfully have some esteemed pros at the helm guiding us through it.
With Stacey Dooley stepping down after two series as well, we’ve also got model Maya Jama stepping in as the new host of proceedings.
So, who exactly will be telling us the dos and don’ts of make-up artistry?
Here’s what we need to know…
Who is Maya Jama?
Maya Jama is a 26-year-old model and TV presenter, best known for hosting shows including Cannonball, Peter Crouch: Save Our Summer and MTV’s True Love or True Lies.
She is also a radio host, presenting her own show on Radio One for three years before departing in 2020.
Maya appeared as a guest judge on this year’s RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, and even tried her hand at acting in Katherine Ryan’s Netflix series, The Duchess.
Last year, she even launched her own skincare brand, MIJ Masks.
Her modelling credentials include work with Adidas, Kurt Geiger and Maybelline, and she has also launched clothing collections with JD Sports and PrettyLittleThing.
Who is Val Garland?
Val Garland was born in Bristol, but raised in Sydney, Australia. She now resides in London.
During her time in Aus, she trained as a hair colourist, before switching specialist area to make-up.
Since arriving back in the UK in 1994, Val has worked with some of the world’s most esteemed designers and models – particularly when it comes to high concepts and fashion shows.
Val worked with Alexander McQueen, Lady Gaga on her Born This Way album cover, and has been featured in Vogue.
She brands herself a ‘global maverick’ and lives up to that reputation – gluing real pressed flowers onto models’ faces at Preen, covering others in mesh for Vivienne Westwood, and applying blush using a potato for another runway.
Who is Dominic Skinner?
Dominic is a global senior make-up artist for MAC Cosmetics, and credits his family travelling around Europe as a young child for his vivid imagination and widespread cultural influences.
Becoming a make-up artist, he has worked with the likes of Alexander McQueen for runways.
He is passionate about skincare within his work, and credits using your unique and personal style in order to find your right kind of make-up.
Speaking to Good Housekeeping, he said: ‘When it comes to make up, put it on because you love it; don’t worry about how someone else might see it. It’s not their life, it’s yours.
‘Now that we’re in isolation, there’s no reason why you can’t just treat yourself to a brighter lipstick and wear it on a Zoom meeting and see how it goes. It’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t work.’
Glow Up series 3 starts at 7pm on BBC iPlayer.
