Line of Duty has been the most raved about show of the year so far, and its viewing figures reflect that.

It’s now been confirmed that episode one of the current series had a whopping 15 million viewers since it aired last month.

The show is now in its sixth season, and Sunday’s installment, episode five, ended with shots being fired after Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and corrupt copper Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper) pointing their guns at each other

Even though the cliffhanger ending left viewers in the dark about who was shot in the dramatic scene, newly-released first look photos of episode six reveal a shaken Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) arriving at the scene.

This is all set to the backdrop of the continued quest to find the mysterious H, as AC-12 hone in on the Organised Crime Group (OCG) and the investigation around journalist Gail Vella’s murder.

Fans eagerly spotted a familiar detail during the tense episode – the misspelling of ‘definitely’ as ‘definately’, which could prove a vital piece of information in the search for elusive bent copper H.

Written by Jed Mercurio, the show has earned a devoted following thanks to its shocking plot twists and impressive ensemble cast.

Taking to Twitter, Martin thanked fans for their support on the new figures.

‘This after 10million for our highest ever overnight viewers with EP5 on Sunday we’re genuinely overwhelmed with the support,’ he said.

‘For those who were there at the start, those who joined along the way and those just learning an OCG from an AFO, thank you.’

Speaking on Good Morning Britain yesterday co-star Adrian Dunbar said the cast – and sometimes boss Jed too – often don’t know how a series is going to end until the 11th hour.

‘Regarding the ending, Jed always gives himself a bit of leeway where the ending is never set in stone, and we don’t get the last episode until very late in the day,’ Adrian said.

‘We don’t know for the first three episodes, sometimes Jed doesn’t know. He might just say to one of us, “do a look over here, a look over there”.’

Even though the 62-year-old said he doesn’t know if there will be another season of the show, he believes it will be back if it continues to be a success.

Line of Duty continues Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
