A release date for the BBC’s upcoming documentary exploring the conservatorship of pop star Britney Spears has been confirmed amid the ongoing #FreeBritney movement among her fans.

Earlier this year, a film titled Framing Britney Spears was released in the US before launching on Sky Documentaries in the UK.

The alarming documentary, which was produced by The New York Times, delved into the criticisms surrounding the court-mandated conservatorship that the 39-year-old singer has been under since 2008 after suffering a public breakdown.

Britney’s father, Jamie Spears, used to oversee both her financial and personal affairs, before stepping down from the latter role due to health reasons.

The BBC will soon be releasing a new 60-minute film titled The Battle for Britney: Fans, Cash and a Conservatorship, which is being led by journalist Mobeen Azhar.

The documentary will see Mobeen travel from Los Angeles to Kentwood, Louisiana, where the Hit Me Baby One More Time singer grew up, as he investigates her 13-year conservatorship.

His journey will result in him attending a court hearing, while also ‘finding himself in the midst of the ongoing battle between Britney’s conservatorship team and the passionate fans behind the #FreeBritney movement’.

Mobeen’s efforts result in him speaking to individuals on both sides of the issue, with several new interviews conducted with people who know Britney well being released.

The interviewees include the musician’s make-up artist Billy Brasfield, her former choreographer Brian Friedman, celebrity blogger Perez Hilton and lawyer Lisa MacCarley.

The film will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer from Saturday May 1, before airing on BBC Two on Wednesday May 5 at 9pm.

Pop star Cher recently spoke out in support of Britney, expressing her belief that her father Jamie should step aside as her conservator.

While she hasn’t seen Framing Britney Spears, the 74-year-old said: ‘I think her father should move over and let her have her life. I believe she’s been paying long enough.’

The singer added: ‘It’s not like everybody on the strip in Las Vegas hasn’t been talking about this for a long time.’

Other stars who have voiced their support of Britney include Miley Cyrus, Paris Hilton and Chloe Grace Moretz.

The Battle for Britney: Fans, Cash and a Conservatorship is set to launch on BBC iPlayer on Saturday May 1 and will air on BBC Two on Wednesday May 5 at 9pm.
