As the UK begins to open up more, films fans might be thinking about when they can make their next trip to the cinema.

Cinemas such as Vue, Odeon, Cineworld and Picturehouse have been forced to closed their doors during the Covid-19 pandemic as film released were delayed throughout 2020.

However if it’s safe enough to do so, we could see cinemas both independent and chain resume welcoming people back into their comfortable seats in May.

Thankfully there will be a few new films to show come next month with family films such as Cruella and Peter Rabbit 2, and award-worthy dramas like Nomadland and Sound of Metal.

We’ve rounded up the best releases below, so you can mark the dates in your diary. (All dates are, of course, subject to change).

When will cinemas reopen?

The UK recently moved to the second stage of the Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s roadmap out of the Covid-19 lockdown, which allowed people to head to pub gardens or go for dinner outside. Gyms and swimming pools can also open again, and personal beauty services such as hairdressing can resume.

Naturally it followed the first stage, which saw schools reopen, the rule of six reinstated outside and outdoor sports returning.

No doubt cinema-going will be a little different going forward (Picture: Reuters)

Cinemas will be allowed to reopen in stage three which begins on May 17, provided infection rates are low enough.

Museums, children’s exercise play areas, indoor exercise classes, can also open their doors.

Indoor hospitality venues including pubs, bars and restaurants will be permitted to reopen, but again for groups of six people maximum.

Emma Stone embodies the iconic 101 Dalmatians Disney villain in this origin story which is slated for release at the end of May.

The teaser trailer didn’t give much away, but hinted at a heist, high society bashes and maybe a little bit of magic. Never a bad thing.

Chris Rock in a Saw reboot must have looked unusual on paper, but that’s exactly what we’re getting.

The comedian stars as Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks who, along with Samuel L Jackson and Max Minghella as his rookie partner, goes on the hunt for sadistic killer Jigsaw.
