Emilia Clarke has revealed she has created a comic book mini-series after initially coming up with the idea as a joke with friends.

The Game Of Thrones star, 34, came up with M.O.M: Mother of Madness, a three-issue miniseries by Image Comics, which she wrote with writer Marguerite Bennett.

Emilia told EW of her new venture: ‘About three years ago, I was in a car with a bunch of friends and was like, “Hey, guys, wouldn’t it be really funny if…” And then I woke up the next day and was like, “That would be funny. That would be f**king cool. Why not?”’

The actress described the humour as ‘Deadpool-esque’ as the comic follows a single mother named Maya who discovers she has superpowers and uses them to take on a gang of human traffickers.

She said of the ‘genre-bending’ comic: ‘We’re always calling mothers superheroes, and I’m like, what if they were? What if they legitimately were superheroes.

‘Maya has had a very hard life, and she finds herself in a place where everything that makes her unique, she hates and is ashamed about. It’s only in the discovery of her powers that she finds her true acceptance of who she is.’

Emilia is yet to reveal what Maya’s superpowers entail but says they are ‘pretty cool’ and tied to her menstrual cycle to flip the narrative about ‘all the things that women don’t like about themselves’.

Part of the reason Emilia wanted to get involved in the genre was that she felt excluded from it growing up after she was not allowed to visit comic book shops with her brother, as she was ‘the loser little sister’, and when she was able to go in the shop, she didn’t see many women represented in the comics on offer.

The creation of her very run of the mill superhero came after the women that were represented in the genre were all in skin-tight Lycra, rather than anyone that was relatable to the average woman.

The first issue of M.O.M: Mother of Madness will be release on July 21.
