How I Met Your Mother’s spin-off has finally been giving the go ahead – with Hilary Duff in the leading role to make it legen… wait for it… dary!

The original beloved sitcom ended its story back in 2014, and ever since then a number of potential reboots have failed to take off.

But How I Met Your Father, to be created by This Is Us masterminds Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, has now been given a 10-episode season.

Hilary, whose recent attempt to revive Lizzie McGuire at Disney Plus was canned, will star in the series as Sophie, who recounts the story of how she meets her children’s dad.

‘I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie,’ Hilary said in a statement.

‘As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother, I’m honored and even a little nervous that Carter [Bays] and Craig [Thomas, show creators] would trust me with the sequel of their baby.

‘Isaac and Elizabeth are brilliant, and I can’t wait to work alongside them and all of their genius.’

‘I realize these are big shoes to fill and I’m excited to slip my 6 ½’s in there!’ she added.

Taking over from Josh Radnor’s Ted Moseby, Sophie relies on her close group of friends in New York City as the narrator time-jumps back to 2021.

According to the official announcement, the gang ‘are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options’.

The series will have a similar format to the original show, but it’s not yet known how, or even if, the new show will connect to the old one.

Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will remain with the new series as executive producers and said in a joint statement: ‘Kids, I’m going to tell you an incredible story: It’s the story of how two writers got lucky enough to make their dream TV show for nine seasons and now get to pass the torch to an inspired new creative team with their own incredible story to tell, the story of How I Met Your Father.

‘We are honored by their passion and vision, and look forward to helping them tell a legendary new story. (Thanks to all the HIMYM fans out there who waited for it.)’

How I Met Your Father is yet to be given a release date.
