Ellen DeGeneres has admitted that she drank three ‘weed drinks’ before driving her wife Portia de Rossi to hospital due to appendicitis, acknowledging that it’s ‘probably not safe’.

In March this year, it emerged that Portia, 48, had been ‘rushed’ to hospital for an appendectomy.

Shortly afterwards, Ellen, 63, spoke out about the ordeal, saying that she was ‘so worried’ about Portia as her partner was in ‘so much pain’ and she didn’t know what was wrong.

During a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Ellen recalled the incident in greater detail, explaining that just before taking Portia to the emergency room, she had consumed ‘weed drinks’ that she found out about from comedian Chelsea Handler.

‘So Chelsea Handler told me about these weed drinks, they’re called Cann, C-A-N-N, and they have CBD or TH – I don’t know what the good thing is,’ Ellen said.

Ellen – who told Jimmy Kimmel earlier on in the interview that she ‘never did like marijuana’ – said that she ‘drank one and I didn’t feel anything, so I drank three’.

‘And then I took two like melatonin sleep pills, and I’m laying in bed and I realise she’s not in bed, and I say, “Are you ok?”’

After hearing Portia groaning in pain, Ellen got out of bed to find her wife of almost 13 years ‘on all fours’.

‘I said, “You’re not ok,” she goes, “I’m ok,” I said, “No, unless you’re playing Twister by yourself you’re not ok.” So I rushed her to the emergency room,’ Ellen recollected.

When asked by Jimmy if she drove Portia to the hospital herself, Ellen replied: ‘I did, I mean, I kicked in, like my adrenaline was like, cause I just had to rush her there.’

The talk show host added: ‘So… it’s probably not safe, I shouldn’t be saying any of this.’

While Jimmy and Ellen covered several topics during their interview, including the latter’s new furniture TV series, the pair didn’t discuss the ‘toxic’ workplace scandal that rocked The Ellen DeGeneres Show last year.

In September 2020, Ellen spoke about the controversy during a monologue on the programme, addressing the ‘allegations of a toxic work environment at our show’ and stating: ‘I learned that things happened here that never should have happened. I take that very seriously and I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected.’
